Pupils begin to look at health and safety within the resistant materials room. Pupils will look for hazards in the room and try to think of ways to prevent incidents from happening. They will be given a copy of the workshop rules, which will govern their behaviour and practice in all year groups. The pupils will produce their own safety poster.
Key Fob project:
Pupils will begin to name equipment and understand what it can be used for. They will develop confidence working in the RM room and using the tools and equipment to make their own key fob. During the design process they will also learn graphic techniques and where to find inspiration for ideas.
Crash car project:
Pupils will be finding out how to make vehicles safer by making model cars with varying degrees of safety features. They will explore impact, structured reinforcement and for parts of the car to collapse and absorb the force of collisions.
Pupils will research famous designers, engineers and their work to put their design education into context
Health and safety in the RM room will be revisited, along with good housekeeping, for example making sure pupils know exactly where tools go when not in use and taking responsibility to put them safely away.
Pupils will build and extend on the practical and graphic skills from the previous year. This year they will be designing and making a trophy made from pine. They will plan, cut shape and smooth their work to a high standard and will join the trophy to a base. (Learning how components can be fixed together.)
This is a focus task to enable pupils to hone their making and connecting skills in preparation for making a string puppet in year 7. This mini project offers more time for pupils to develop motor skills further.
Pupils will research buildings and materials, past and present and produce a fact file of their findings. They will look at availability and choice of materials, cost and environmental concerns for the architect and builder to consider.
String puppet project:
Having developed more skills the pupils will now go on to design and make a string operated puppet. The design brief will ask pupils to consider both the form and the function of the product. It is expected that they will come up with a good selection of ideas with lots of communication through annotation.
Metal key Fob:
Pupils will come up with four design ideas for a key fob made from metal. The main emphasis however, will be developing the necessary skills to cut out, drill and smooth the metal to shape-so the focus here is on motor skills.
Year 7 Research project:
Pupils will research the development of the electric kettle. Thy will combine pictures and text to describe this journey through time and maybe even come up with their own innovation!
There are a number of focus tasks to stretch the ability of pupils such as making a clock from an old CD, a wooden pencil holder, noughts and crosses game and wind twizzles. Again these tasks are high on practical skills.
Storage Box project:
During this project, pupils will design and make a wooden storage box to keep things in. They will be using a combination of materials to construct this box. As well as building on previous skills they have learned, pupils will also learn how to make and use butt joints and lap joints. This project will herald the use of more specialist tools such as: the mitre saw, tenon saw, marking gauge, marking knife and bench hook.
The design element of the box is integral to this project; pupils will be carrying out research and producing mood boards to help inspire the creative process. Pupils are expected to be highly creative in the surface decoration of their product where there is a strong cross curricular link to art.
Research of designers work, such as Clarice Cliffe, Laura Ashley and William Morris will be carried out as a fact file. This in turn will act as an extension task, to inspire alternative ideas for the surface decoration of their work.
